Angels 3, Mariners 2
Three out of four aint bad, but like I said yesterday, it's hard to be enthused by the way the Angels played in this series. All four games were too close (one run games, in fact) for comfort. Echoing Rob's sentiments, a championship-caliber club does not play close games with a team like the Mariners.
Quinlan is knocking the snot out of the ball right now (.407/.441/.648 in June), which raises the question "what the hell took so long?" What took so long for Scioscia to realize what Quinlan could do, that is. I felt Quinlan was the obvious choice for the 25th roster spot- a spot which was eventually handed to Josh Paul for no apparent reason- after he hit .352 with a couple of HR in the spring. This, just a season removed from a .333/.397/.555 season at AAA Salt Lake. He deserved a shot when Erstad went down, but didn't get it. Now that he's finally getting a fair shake, it's great to see him running with it.
Colon wobbled today, but he didn't fall down. His velocity was down again (topping-out at 95, and even that was only after several innings of work) and he was back to taking a ton of time between pitches. His control was good though, and his movement was there as well.
Just think- a month ago if Bartolo Colon had a performance like this (6 IP, 2 ER, 6 K) we would have been thrilled to no end. Now, after a string of dominate starts, we look at this as "shaky". How quickly things change...
